“We will not take one step back from our needs - the ministry and the government would do well to listen.” Thousands of students took the streets in Athens on Wednesday under the slogan “From Greece to France,” demanding higher public education funding, affordable student housing, and more financial support for students struggling with a skyrocketing cost of living. Parallel student actions in Thessaloniki, Patras and other cities were joined by teachers and public-sector workers. Greek Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki said ahead of Wednesday’s demonstrations that she acknowledges the financial pressure the country’s students face, and said plans are underway to expand and upgrade student housing facilities. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' government will face elections in mid-2027.
